Engraving Style Guide

Engraving Style Guide

Which engraving style is right for your design?

Every engraving style creates a different result. The best option depends on your photo, artwork and the type of finish you're looking for.

Below you'll find real examples of each engraving style, along with their advantages, limitations and when we recommend choosing them.

Realistic Photo Engraving

Best for portraits, pets, memorial jewellery and detailed photographs.

This style uses thousands of tiny engraved dots and lines to recreate your original photograph with as much detail as possible. The result is elegant, realistic and highly detailed.

Because the engraving is made using fine detail rather than solid black areas, the image appears differently depending on how the light reflects from the metal.

Best for

✔ Portraits

✔ Pets

✔ Memorial jewellery

✔ Wedding photos

✔ Baby photos

✔ Family photos

Pros

  • Produces the most realistic photo reproduction.
  • Captures fine facial details and shading.
  • Elegant and premium appearance.
  • Perfect for sentimental keepsakes.
  • Ideal for high-quality photos.

Things to consider

  • Image is more subtle and may only be clearly visible from certain angles or in different lighting.
  • Not every photo is suitable—some images work better as line art.
  • Very dark, blurry or low-quality photos may lose fine detail.
  • Small details may not appear as prominently as they do on a screen.
  • Highly polished finishes can reflect light, making the engraving appear lighter from some angles.
  • The final result can vary slightly depending on the metal finish and the quality of the original photo.

Line Art Engraving

Best for clean, modern designs.

Your photo is carefully converted into a custom line drawing before being engraved.

Instead of reproducing every photographic detail, this style simplifies the image into clean outlines while still keeping the personality and recognisable features of your subject.

Best for

✔ Couples

✔ Families

✔ Pets

✔ Children's drawings

✔ Logos

✔ Minimalist designs

Pros

  • Bold and easy to see.
  • Excellent visibility from almost every angle.
  • Modern, timeless appearance.
  • Works well on all metal colours.
  • Great option when photo quality isn't perfect.

Things to consider

  • Fine photographic details are intentionally simplified.
  • Some background elements may be removed.
  • Very complex photos may need artistic adjustments for the best result.
  • The finished design is an artistic interpretation rather than an exact photograph.

Bold Black Engraving

(Laser Annealed Finish)

Best for logos, names, text and bold artwork.

Rather than engraving deeply into the metal, laser annealing creates a permanent dark marking on the surface of stainless steel. This produces a bold, high-contrast finish that is ideal when readability is the priority.

Best for

✔ Text

✔ Logos

✔ Signatures

✔ Line art

✔ Business branding

Pros

  • High-contrast dark finish.
  • Easy to read.
  • Excellent for fine text.
  • Permanent finish.
  • Smooth surface with minimal material removal.

Things to consider

  • The dark finish can still appear lighter or darker depending on the viewing angle and lighting.
  • Available on selected products and materials only.
  • The shade of black may vary slightly depending on the metal finish.
  • Highly polished surfaces can reflect light and slightly reduce contrast.

Choosing the Right Metal Finish

The colour of your jewellery also changes how an engraving appears.

Black

⭐ Best visibility

The highest contrast and easiest finish to read from almost every angle.

Silver / Stainless Steel

The most detailed finish for realistic photo engraving.

Because silver is highly reflective, the engraving can appear lighter or darker as the light changes.

Gold

Produces a softer, elegant engraving with slightly less contrast than black.

Rose Gold

A warm, premium finish with a subtle engraved appearance.

We Choose the Style That Gives the Best Result

If you don't specify a preferred engraving style, we'll carefully assess your photo and choose the option that will produce the best final result.

Sometimes that's a realistic photo engraving.

Sometimes it's line art.

Sometimes a logo or artwork is better suited to a bold black engraving.

Our goal is always to create the best possible keepsake—not simply engrave the image exactly as it was uploaded.

Tips for the Best Results

  • Upload the highest quality photo you have.
  • Choose images that are well lit and in focus.
  • Avoid screenshots or heavily filtered images where possible.
  • Close-up photos usually produce the best engraving.
  • If you're unsure, don't worry—we'll assess your photo before engraving and contact you if we think another style will produce a better result.

Not Sure Which Style to Choose?

Simply upload your photo and we'll do the hard work.

Every design is individually reviewed before engraving, and if we believe another style will produce a significantly better result, we'll contact you before production.
